Faves: Netflix binge-worthy legal shows

Whenever I have free time, I love to watch Netflix. Especially in winter, I like to binge-watch an entire season (or two) in a day. Lately I’ve been getting a lot of questions about what I like to watch and if I’ve got some law-related recommendations (other than Suits). Well, as a law student, my favorite kind of shows ARE the legal (and crime) ones! Here is my top 3 at the time:

3. How to get away with murder
This show is about a group of ambitious law students and their criminal defense professor, that get drawn into a real-life murder conspiracy. I started watching this show 3 years ago when I knew that I wanted to study law and I immediately loved it. It’s set on the university but also has a mix of some personal drama, which makes it even more exciting. The show has 4 seasons and I personally enjoyed the first two the most. To those who are thinking of going to law school: this may be the perfect show to watch.

2. The Confession Tapes
Other than fiction I also really like to watch a good (crime) documentary from time to time. The Confession Tapes is one of those documentaries that really made a big impression on me. It’s about 6 cases of possible false confessions that are leading to murder convictions. Would you confess a crime you didn’t commit? Most people would answer yes with certainty. But I promise you, after watching a couple of episodes you’re doubting the answer you gave in the first place.. A must see, definitely!

1. My all-time favorite: The Good Wife
The Good Wife. What can I say. My holy grail in the very many law-related tv shows there are. I started watching this show in 2016 and loved it so much that I binge-watched the entire 7 years worth of show in the short time span of just 3 months. (shame on me)
The reason why I like the Good Wife so much: because it really has the perfect mix of personal life and family drama, but is also following Alicia on her way of climbing the legal ladder and the hard decisions she has to make on her way up. The cases are set up very-well and the defenses from Alicia and her team are great inspirations on the days you feel like not studying. Hearing great oral arguments in court always gives me motivation!

My favourite (high-end) make-up products (2017)

It’s time for another favourites post! As you guys might know, I love make-up. I’m not as obsessed with it as I was at 16 years old (I could literally spend my whole salary to make-up at that time) but, I still love a good make-up product! With time, I found out what products I like the most and I have some all-time favourites.

FOUNDATION
I personally like lightweight foundations that don’t feel or get ‘cakey’, I don’t like to ‘see’ the foundation. My skintype is normal, unless a bit of redness on my cheeks I have quite a smooth face.
I’ve used a few foundations that were quite opaque in the past, like the Estee Lauder double wear, but I really didn’t like it on my skin. I feel like it’s a bit too much for me, it makes me look a bit ‘fake’.

– Giorgio Armani, Luminous Silk foundation
€52,- de Bijenkorf

I bought this foundation for the first time in 2015, I still love it and bought it again many more times! It’s not heavy on the skin, not too opaque (which I like) and it just feels very good on my skin. It doesn’t dry-out my skin and feels like a ‘satin’ layer.

I personally like to use two colors, it gives me the ability to mix them into the perfect color for my skin at that moment. When I’m a bit more tan, in summer, I use more of the darker color (5.5).

Other (lightweight) foundations I also really like are:
– Guerlain Lingerie de Peau
– Guerlain Terracotta Joli Teint (perfect for summer, it gives you a bit of a ‘bronzy’ look.

CONTOURING
For contouring, I like to use powder products. I’m not a big fan of a very ‘heavy’ contoured look, I like it to be natural and soft. My idea of contouring is not that you are ‘creating’ cheekbones or other facial feautures, but to accentuate what you already have!

– Anastasia Contour Kit
€48,40 de Bijenkorf

My all-time favourite contour kit! (I’m sorry for the ugly packaging) but as you can see I have this one for quite a long time now. The powders from Anastasia are just amazing, I got this kit in the color light.
What I really like about this kit is that you can buy refill-powders for it and you don’t have to buy the whole kit again, the colors I like to use the most are the two middle colors. Banana (the yellow-ish color) to set my concealer and fawn to accentuate my cheekbones.

– Tom Ford Skin Illuminating Powder duo
€72,- de Bijenkorf

This highlighter, I just have no words for it. I got it last summer and it is AMAZING. I’ve always loved a good highlighter, but this one is just on ANOTHER level. It really gives you a ‘glow’ and makes your cheekbones pop! Unlike other highlighters, you’re not getting a ‘glittery’ face from it. It really just gives the perfect glow without it being too much. Yes, would definitely recommend this one!

– Benefit, Hoola bronzer
€29,40 feelunique.com

My Hoola bronzer is like my baby. It was one of the first make-up products I bought when I got into make-up 5 years ago. I still love it so much! It gives you the perfect color and it’s also great for contouring.

BROWS
For my brows I’ve used Anastasia products since 2013, the dipbrow, the brow pencil, name it and I’ve used it. I have dark eyebrows that don’t need too much filling, so I mainly focus on the ‘holes’ in my brow and to just make them nice and neat.

Benefit ka-BROW! gel
€27,- Benefit

I got it in the color 5 ‘deep’, since I got this I haven’t touched my dipbrow anymore! I really like that it has a little brush in it, so it’s really easy to use in the morning when you’re in a hurry. The formula is just great, you don’t need to much of it and it really lasts long. But, it is quite ‘the same’ as the dipbrow.

Anastasia Dip Brow
$18 Sephora

Still, I love my dipbrow too and it definitely belongs in my favourites. I’ve used this product for such a long time! The color I use is medium-brown. I bought my first one in the color ‘ebony’ in 2013, but I like to use a bit of a lighter color. It really lasts long, I’ve had my previous one for like a year! A tip that I use: over time the product gets a bit ‘dry’, put a drop of baby oil in it and it’s like new again.

DIOR Diorshow Brow Styler
€22,- Douglas

I also like to use a pencil from time-to-time, to fill out the edges of my brow. I like to use the Diorshow brow pencil for this. I got this in the color 002 light brown.

MASCARA
What I seek in a good mascara: length, volume and that it keeps my lashes from ‘sagging’. I have quite long lashes, so mascaras tend to get a bit lumpy with my lashes. My all-time favourite mascara, that I use since 2014 is: volume de Chanel mascara

Chanel, volume de Chanel mascara
€35,- Douglas

This mascara gives me the perfect fake-looking eyelashes! It is GREAT, I’ve always struggled to find the ‘perfect’ mascara, but I haven’t even thought of other mascaras since I had this one. I’ve re-bought this many, many times and I always have one extra just to be sure. It can get a bit clumpy, so you don’t have to use much. And I don’t have to use a lash curler when I use this mascara, it gives my lashes great length.

These were my favourite make-up products! I hope you’ve enjoyed them and if you would like to read more make-up related posts, or have questions, comment them below.

How I lost 14 kg (30 lbs) in 3 months

I’ve always been a curvy girl, I struggled with my weight since I was a kid and I’ve always carried a few pounds more than the average kids in my class. I did manage to lose weight a couple of times when I was in high school, but I was a strong yo-yoer with my weight at that time.

However, I had a really negative body image in puberty. I remember being in the first year of high school and refusing to go on a school swimming trip because it required a bikini! I’ll have to admit now, by looking at old pictures of me in my teen years, that I was totally overstressing my body image. Yes, I probably weighed a couple of pounds more than I should with my length and age, but it wasn’t as bad as I saw it at that time. Still, I was in high school, and obviously at that age you’re a bit more concerned with the way you look.

When I turned 17, I started to get more comfortable with the way my body looked and it wasn’t really a stress-worthy problem anymore. I still had the ‘I’ll start monday’-thoughts, but it didn’t matter as much as it did to me before. Taking care of my weight wasn’t really a priority in my life anymore. I was busy with all the new things in my life, graduated from high school and the ‘teenage insecurities’ started to dissapear a bit.

However, I got a bit too comfortable. I did really let myself go with my eating habits, it wasn’t healthy at all and I didn’t have a regular eating habit/schedule. I slowly started to gain more and more weight. When the summer approached, I was on my heaviest weight ever.
In the first week of May 2016 I went on holiday with my mom, I really realized how much I’d gained by then.

In the upcoming weeks before my holiday I’d tried to lose a couple of pounds and went to the gym a few times a week. But when we arrived at our holiday destination, even in the enormous shopping malls I didn’t even like to shop for an outfit anymore. Nothing seemed to flatter me anymore, no matter what I’d put on. I always had the same thought in my head everytime I saw clothes I liked: first I had to lose some weight, then I could shop for new clothes.

But in that time I wasn’t feeling very well, there were many things going on in my personal life and I worried about them a lot. I’d completely lost interest in anything, including working out. Nothing made me feel happy or good anymore. I started to isolate myself untill at one point I didn’t even came outside anymore. I really wanted to change the way I lived at that point and make a difference (I told myself that literally every day) but coming out of that bad habit took some time.

When the summer was coming to an end, I returned from my summer holiday. September was approaching, so everyone around me was focusing on the new school year. I’d decided to take a gap year before I began studying law at the University of Amsterdam.

I still worked at the local fitness center where I started 3 years earlier. So I was ‘lucky’ to have free access to the gym whenever I wanted and had no struggle of wasting my money if I didn’t show up for a while. (On the other hand, if you’re looking for motivation: A paid gym membership can be a big stick to keep your motivation of going to the gym high.)

THE CHANGE / HOW I LOST 14 KG (30 LBS)
Oktober 2016 –
I decided that I was going to eat healthy again and I’d set the goal for going to the gym at least 4-5 times a week. I’m that kind of person that mostly aims for higher goals. I could’ve also started with setting the plan of attending the gym for at least 2 times a week, but, I was well aware of my lazy ass that needed a kick to get up and keep going. I knew that going to the gym for a less amount of times a week wasn’t enough motivation for me and so it would only made my journey harder and longer.
I’m not saying that this is the perfect method for everyone, but it really worked for me. When I used to be good on track in the gym and focused on clean eating, I could really stick to that schedule for a couple of months if I had regularity in my scheme. My goal was to focus on weight training to gain muscles and thereby lose the weight more easily as you’re burning more. With that weight training, I wanted to go to the gym 5 times a week, so that everyday I could train a different part of my body.

When I started, I had quite some experience with the gym and knowledge about healthy eating/weight loss. If you’re new to the ‘gymlife’ a slower approach may be a better fit for the beginning. Otherwise you’ve the risk of feeling like it’s too much and your body has to get used to the changes your making. Don’t overdo it!

Well, after just one week I saw such a big difference. The bloated feeling went away and my belly was a lot smaller after the first week.
I have always carried my weight mostly on my legs and hips. But when I started gaining serious weight, more and more went to the middle part of my body. Seeing the results got me even more motivated.

But when I stepped on the scale after the first two weeks I hadn’t even lost a pound. The next day I had planned my first cheatday. I was curious about cheatdays. Shouldn’t I just keep going with the healthy eating? Why would I waste my hard work by taking a cheat day? No need to say I was surprised when I stepped on the scale the day after the cheat day: I literally lost 2 kilos (5 lbs) in comparison with 2 days earlier!

I’m convinced cheat days are a necessity when losing weight. Obviously you don’t have to exaggerate it and eat everything you come across (it’s all about the moderation) but it’s a great metabolism boost. Think about it: when you eat less than you need (your BMR: more about that later) you’re losing weight. But, over the time your body gets used to the the eating less and you don’t lose the weight as easily. If you’re body gets a ‘shock’ from it’s regular eating schedule with a cheat day, it will work harder to burn the extra calories (and thereby fat) off.
So, if you’ve hit that ‘plateau’ and feel like you’re not seeing results anymore: are you taking cheat days?

I kept up with the training schedule & healthy eating and after 3 months I’d lost 14 kg (30 lbs). The first weeks I lost weight really quickly, after a couple of weeks it started to slow down. But, I knew that I was gaining muscle because of the weight training and I started to look less on the scale and more in the mirror. I felt so good again, I could fit my old pants and I just had a lot more energy. I still wasn’t at my ultimate goal weight, but it didn’t feel like a ‘problem’ for me anymore. It was december, the Holidays came up and I started to become a bit sloppy with my training and eating schedule. But since then, I’ve never gained the extra weight back!

The importance of eating healthy and ENOUGH in order to lose weight is SO underrated. If I’d done a crazy diet method I would have gained the weight back twice as hard! Now, exactly one year later, I’m still benefiting from the results I’ve got from working hard for 3 months! For everyone who’s struggling with losing weight: it gets though, it’s not easy, but you HAVE to keep going. Think about your goals and how happy you’ll be once you’ve reached them!

NEW YEAR, NEW GOALS

Well I can hear you thinking, you said you didn’t reach your ultimate goal weight… That’s right and overall I just want to eat healthy again and go to the gym more often. I’m planning on writing blog posts every now and then about my way of healthy eating, gym and combining them with law school. I want to post some recipes and meals I like and hope to motivate those who look for it. If you’re interested in joining me, I suggest you follow me on instagram to follow my journey. I’m looking forward to it!

My first designer handbag: the Louis Vuitton – Speedy 30

When I was 13 years old I gradually acquired an interest in designer bags. At that age I loved to surf the internet and visit online designer forums, drooling on all the pretty bags I saw. Especially the (Damier checker print) Louis Vuitton bags catched my eye.

Obviously, at that age, I couldn’t even dream of purchasing one and I knew that I was too young for bags like those.. But the fascination started.

When I turned 16 and got my first job at the local fitness center, a couple of months later I was surprised at how much I’d actually saved up. I also hadn’t spend my birthday money yet and had the idea of buying myself a memorable sweet-16 present. I decided that I wanted to buy the Speedy I fell in love with 3 years earlier. I’d always wanted designer bags and the Speedy seemed like the perfect first. (It was quite a bummer that in those 3 years the price of a Speedy 30 had increased from €450 euro in 2010 to €610 euro in 2013. Oh well… love is blind)

My mom, on the other hand, is NOT blind and thought I’d lost my mind the first time she saw that price. Lol.

Though, as understanding as she’s always been: she told me that it was my own money and I had to spend it thoughtfully. But, since I saved up for it and considered it carefully, she was okay with it.

So there I went, together with my mom on the way to Amsterdam!

The moment I finally walked out the store with the big brown bag in my hands, I felt so proud and happy. My first designer handbag, the Speedy I was obsessed with, all mine!

At first sight, the Speedy 30 isn’t as standout as the other bags in the store or even in the catalogue. Nonetheless, the Speedy 30 is the very first handbag for everyday use that Louis Vuitton designed in the early 1930’s. The number ’30’ that comes after the name is in reference to the size of the bag.

A well known wearer of the bag is (style goddess) Audrey Hepburn! The bag was created in a smaller 25 cm size specially for her. The Speedy family nowaday runs from size 25 to size 40.

After having the bag for almost 5 years now, I still love it like the first day. A couple months ago the zipper broke and I got it replaced for like €25 euro, that’s the only ‘problem’ I’ve had with this bag so far! It ages really well, the canvas doesn’t get easily destroyed and I love that. This is my go-to bag for everything, shopping, the gym – I even wear this bag to class when I don’t have to carry much – I love that it’s resistible and I don’t have to be scared to ruin it.

I would say this is a great first designer bag if you’re looking into buying one, it’s a relatively ‘cheap’ designer bag and the Speedy never goes out of style.
